Reading at Home
English/ Language Arts
We are learning the following early reading behaviors: how to handle a book correctly and with care, how to choose and name books, how to read for 5-10 minutes, how to preview a book and how to share ideas about books.
We have already met the Superkids Cass and Oswald. Next, we meet Golly! He’s a Superdog. He lives at Gus and Gert’s Gas Station and Garage and loves to sniff all of the things in his environment. After G, we will meet the Superkids for letters A and D, in addition to learning letter formation and sound recognition of letters C, Q and G, A and D. We are learning how to tead from left to right and to “sweep left” again. We are learning 1:1 correspondence between the written word and the spoken word by painting with the reading finger. We are learning to use visual information, such as the first letter of the word, to read known and new words. We are also learning how to make predictions based on information in the pictures and on personal experiences.
Math
Counting, counting, counting!
And comparing, too! In this unit, we focus on five mathematical (emphases). They are:
(1) Counting and Quantity-
Developing strategies for accurately counting a set of objects.
(2) Counting and Quantity-
Developing the idea of equivalence
(3) Linear Measurement-
Understanding Length
(4) Counting and Quantity-
Developing an understanding of the magnitude and position of numbers.
This includes comparing two or more quantities to determine which is more. Developing language such as: less, fewer, least, fewest, most, same, and equal to, as well as ordering quantities from least to most.
(5) Whole Number Operations-
Using manipulatives, drawings, tools, and notation to show strategies and solutions.
